Jonathan Greenberg is an Assistant Professor of Geography at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He was an Assistant Project Scientist at Department of Land, Air and Water Resources UC Davis (August 2010 to present), Postdoctoral Researcher at UC Davis. Postdoctoral Advisors: Quinn J. Hart and Susan L. Ustin.(January 2007 – August 2010), and National Research Council (NRC) Postdoctoral Research Associate at NASA Ames Research Center (January 2005 – January 2007).

Research Interests
- Utilizing cutting-edge sensors (Lidar, hyperspectral, and hyperspatial) and developing advanced remote sensing image analyses to produce accurate, high spatial and thematic resolution maps of vegetation state and dynamics.
- Fusing remotely sensed vegetation data with meteorological and hydrological modeling outputs to address questions of landscape-level ecosystem dynamics under past, present and predicted future climate conditions.
- Addressing management and conservation needs using geospatial technologies.

Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta mapping project

Led a team of graduate and undergraduate students to develop maps of invasive aquatic vegetation using cutting-edge hyperspectral and Lidar remote sensing analyses. Developed and implemented research to understand the spread of invasive vegetation in the context of its local abiotic conditions. Applied individual tree crown recognition algorithms to a fused Lidar-hyperspectral dataset to address questions of the impacts of trees and their removal on Delta levee stability and ecosystem function. Research supervisor: Dr. Susan L. Ustin. See publications #8, 12, 14 and 17, submitted manuscript #2 and #4, and presentations #17, 21-22, 39, 41-46, 49-59, 63-65.
Ecological niche of trees in the Lake Tahoe Basin

Investigated the abiotic factors influencing tree distributions in the Lake Tahoe Basin by developing continuous vegetation and microclimate conditions derived from remote sensing and meteorological/ hydrological modeling. Developed an analytical approach unique to this type of dataset to derive the potential niche (as opposed to realized niche) of conifer trees. Conclusions suggested a highly heterogeneous set of resource limitations on trees based on their position in the landscape. Research collaborators: Solomon Z. Dobrowski and Vern C. Vanderbilt. Individual tree crown mapping using hyperspatial remote sensing

Derived maps of individual tree crowns using hyperspatial remote sensing imagery and computer vision techniques. Developed “remote sensing aware” allometric equations that predict individual tree biomass from per-tree crown area estimates derived from hyperspatial imagery. Research supervisor: Dr. Vern C. The Wieslander dataset: Using a historic dataset to test uncertainty in species distribution model projections under climate change

Examined the uncertainties in species distribution models (SDMs) by using a historic database of vegetation distributions from the early 1900’s and climate reconstructions from this same period to construct SDMs. SDMs constructed from the historic vegetation distributions and climate were then applied to modern climate conditions to predict modern vegetation distributions, which were then compared to actual modern vegetation distributions. Research collaborators: Solomon Z. Dobrowski and James Thorne. See publications #19 and 21, and submitted manuscripts #3.
Spatial, cultural and economic impacts on deforestation of a neotropical rainforest

Performed a decadal change detection of deforestation in the tropical rainforests of Yasuní National Park, Ecuador, using remote sensing imagery, and investigated spatial and socio-economic factors influencing the rates of forest loss. Concluded that proximity to roads and towns significantly increases deforestation rates, and that deforestation in this park was increasing exponentially and was therefore unsustainable. Research was cited in a letter written by a group of concerned scientists to the presidents of Ecuador and Brazil requesting that the construction of a new oil-access road through the Yasuní National Park be halted. See publication #6 and presentations #10, 14-16.
